Website 101 for Small Business Owners

If you take anything from this post, let it be this:
Your website is not just one thing. It’s multiple moving pieces working together.

And most of the frantic, panicked emails I get?
They come from people not realizing that until something stops working.

So let’s talk about it!

Your Website Needs BOTH Hosting and a Domain

(Yes. Both. No, they are not the same.)

This is one of the most common things I explain to clients, and honestly, I don’t blame anyone for being confused. No one teaches this.

Your website has two main parts:

1. Hosting
This is where your website lives. It stores your pages, photos, design, and content.

For example, I design most websites on Showit. Showit is hosting only. It’s the platform where your website is built and stored.

Hosting usually costs around $200–$300 per year, depending on the platform.

Some platforms like Squarespace or Wix bundle hosting in their monthly plans, but with Showit, you still need a separate domain.

2. Your Domain
This is your website address.
Think:
www.yourbusinessname.com

Domains are usually purchased through places like:

  • GoDaddy
  • Squarespace

And yes, this is separate from your hosting.

Think of it like this:
Hosting = your house
Domain = your address

You need both. Otherwise, people literally cannot find you.

And here’s the bonus most people don’t realize:
Your domain and hosting are business expenses and tax write-offs.

Story #1: The Email That Didn’t Exist

One of my clients once came to me completely stressed.

She said, “My email isn’t working and I don’t know what to do”

After digging, we realized what happened.

She had picked an email like:
hello@herbusiness.com

But she never actually set up an inbox.

Here’s the truth:
Choosing an email name is not the same as creating an email account.

You still need to:

  • Purchase your domain
  • Set up email hosting (like Google Workspace)
  • Connect it in your DNS settings
  • Create the inbox
  • Log in and check it

If you don’t do this… your email literally does not exist.

Story #2: The Website That Went Down Overnight

Another client reached out to me in full panic mode because their website suddenly went down.

The reason?

The credit card expired.

That’s it.

The only times I’ve ever seen a website go down are because:

  • Hosting wasn’t paid
  • The domain expired
  • Billing info wasn’t updated

PSSTTT – your Hosting and Domain provider will send you MANY emails before a site goes down. If it gets to that point you are at serious risk of losing your domain.

So here’s my advice:
Pay attention to your subscriptions.
And make sure your account emails go to an inbox you actually check.

Your website is a business asset. Treat it like one!

Other Things People Forget About Their Website

Here are a few more things I see all the time:

✔️ Your domain and hosting renew every year
Set reminders. Automate payments. Future you will thank you.

✔️ Your domain controls your email
If your domain expires, your email stops working too. Yes, really.

✔️ Backups matter
Even if your platform has them, you should know where your photos and files live.

✔️ You need to control your own accounts
I don’t care if your website was set up by a marketing agency, an intern, or your cousin’s brother’s friend… as the business owner, you need to be the one with access.

You should know:

  • Where your domain is purchased
  • Where your website is hosted
  • How your email is set up
  • How your subscriptions are paid

Because if that person disappears, changes jobs, or stops answering you, your business shouldn’t go down with them.

This happens more than you think. And it’s completely avoidable.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

Your website is not only about how it looks. It’s about how it works for your business.
It’s your credibility, your marketing, your portfolio, and your sales tool.

When the foundation isn’t set up correctly, it can cost you:

  • Leads
  • Inquiries
  • Trust
  • And honestly… your sanity.

This is why I care so much about both the strategy and the structure behind the design. Pretty is great. Functional is non-negotiable.

Want an Easy Starting Point?

If you’re overwhelmed, confused, or just want something that actually works, I design most of my client sites on Showit for a reason.

It’s flexible, easy to update, and built for service-based businesses who want a custom look without a complicated backend.

And if you want help making sure your homepage actually converts (because design alone won’t do that), I created a free resource called The Homepage Frame.

It walks you through:

  • What content to include
  • How to structure your homepage
  • What actually makes people inquire
  • The strategy behind your design

Final Thoughts

If your website feels confusing, overwhelming, or held together with duct tape… you’re not alone.

And if nobody has ever explained the difference between hosting, domains, and email setup to you before, now you know.

And if you take anything from this:
Check your subscriptions.
Set up your email properly.
And treat your website like the business asset it is.
